1. PRESENTACIÓN DE LA UNIDAD

Título

El inicio de la Edad Media. Germanos y bizantinos

1. UNIT PRESENTATION

Title

The Early Middle Ages. Germanic kingdoms and the Byzantine Empire

Unit description

This unit starts the study of the Middle Ages, linking it with the end of Antiquity and establishing its periodization between the 5th and 15th centuries in the three classic medieval stages: Early, High and Late Middle Ages. Next, the first of these stages is addressed in the two great territorial scopes arisen after the fall of the Roman Empire: the Byzantine Empire in the East and the Germanic kingdoms in the West, focusing the interest on the Visigothic kingdom and the Carolingian Empire. In all of them, the main features of their historic evolution and political, administrative, economic, social and cultural organisation are studied. The technique of the unit devoted to managing time information provides a basic tool for historical study and the correct placement of their periods and stages through the making and discussing of timelines.
